Meet Our Creators

Updated: Apr 20, 2021

Drills, nail guns, scissors, flower petals, lighter sabers, and LED light, are some of the few things scattered on the floor as our creators put together the Flower Shower and the Intergalactic Laser experiences, among eight others. We chatted a conversation with Luke and Andy as they walked us through the organized chaos of Candid Charlotte (CLT).

Ideas, Blueprint, Actions!

What are your inspirations for creating Candid CLT?

Candid’s inspiration came from our years of experience in building immersive sets in our respective escape rooms. We found that while our customers certainly enjoyed solving puzzles, they also really enjoyed being able to escape reality and be immersed in a completely different environment. And while in escape rooms we generally discourage picture taking, we highly encourage it in Candid.

How long does it take for you to create these sets?

Different sets usually require different build times but usually range from a couple of days to weeks, depending on the complexity of the set. For example, Flower Shower took a week to build due to the complex layering of the flowers.

What is your most intricate set?

By far the most intricate set would be Flower Shower. The build, while only taking a week to build, required a lot of careful planning and layering of each synthetic flower. The goal was to make someone feel as if they were transported to the middle of the rainforest.

What do you want your guests to walk away with after each visit?

While we built our sets with the most optimal lighting and creative angles, we encourage our guests to maximize and stretch their creativity to capture a unique picture for them. We want to provoke the imagination and let our guests show off their best angles.

Proud Small Business Owners

Outside of Candid CLT, Luke and Andy are also small business owners to their escape rooms, The Box Escape Room founded in 2016 and Noda Escapes 2018. They are no strangers to building sets drawing straight from their imaginations that have wowed many guests. Although they can be considered as ‘competitions’, the two believe in showing support for other local escape rooms.

What was it like to become an entrepreneur and own your own business?

Entrepreneurship is oftentimes romanticized by sayings like, “be your own boss”, “set your own schedule” and of course “hustle!”. However, some people doesn't realize the true effort and determination it requires. There’s no timer for the hours that are put in, or the hours of sleep that are lost.

And by far the least talked about subject is the risk that’s associated with putting in such a large investment. However, with all that being said, it is one of the most satisfying things I have ever felt. There is a quote that perfectly fits the feeling “I had never been more broke in my life, and I had also never been more happy”.

How has Covid-19 impacted your businesses?

Covid-19 was certainly difficult for all businesses across the board, and of course, the escape room industry was no different. The pandemic had brought a wave of closures of many escape rooms throughout the country. I would consider my business one of the lucky ones to survive the pandemic. But while being stuck inside, I had gotten what you call “itchy hands”--an itch relieved only by building. And thus Candid was born.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Entrepreneurship is not easy. It’s a long grueling process and there’s absolute no guarantee for success. So when it comes to being an entrepreneur, unde

rstand the risk that comes with the territory. And while determination is a necessity, consistency is more important. Being consistent with your effort is far more important than temporary motivation.

There is something for everyone to enjoy, it is a welcoming environment where people welcome to explore and capture moments with their friends and family. Whether you have your head in the cloud, the queen and king of chess, or a nostalgic tribute to 90’s horror. Candid CLT is sure to bring joy and amazement to you.
